Female Vocal Artists Flourish within the Jazz Domain

At the dawn of jazz in the 20th century, women have been a minority in what is otherwise known as a male-dominated world. However, vocally female vocal artists have flourished and excelled within the jazz domain. With many talented singers, some of the finest female jazz singers have possessed voices as well as personalities that are unique giving them the ability to hold their own. Many influential and accomplished female singers have been within the jazz realm over the years. There are many who could be listed at the top. However, there’s the Holy Trinity comprised of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. There are also some contemporary chanteuses such as Diana Krall, and even more languid and sensual Julie London that has earned their place as top jazz artists.

The Descendants of Female Jazz

Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald were such a great example they’ve created descendants of female jazz such as Diana Krall. Jazz is far from being a dead art form, it is still alive and it is still evolving through the talent of younger singers just waiting in the wings. Diana Krall got her start playing in a jazz group in high school. By the time she was 15, she was performing in Nanaimo restaurants. She had the privilege of studying with a Canadian jazz great by the name of Don Thompson who played the bass and piano. Since then Krall has seen her jazz career grow with much success.

The Sensual Sound of Julie London

Nancy Peck, otherwise known as Julie London, rose to fame as an American pop and jazz singer, as well as actress. She had an attractive smoky yet sensual voice that only added to her languid demeanor. With 32 albums released, it was clear that her sound matched pop and jazz standards for the 50s and 60s. Her signature song is the classic, “Cry Me a River” which was produced in 1955. Her music is still used today in television series and movies which is continued to make Julie London and iconic jazz artist.
